Your Best Friend Travels with You! A Guide to Stress-Free Pet Travel This Summer
Hello, motorhome families (furry friends included)!
Is there anything better than waking up surrounded by nature, opening the door of your motorhome and seeing your dog running happily through the countryside? Travelling with your home on your back is the freest way to explore the world, and the best part is that you don’t have to leave anyone behind.
But to ensure the trip is a success rather than a headache, there are a couple of things you need to bear in mind.
. This month, I’m giving you a comprehensive guide to ensure that travelling with your furry best friend is a comfortable and safe experience for everyone.
Vehicle Safety: Protect Your Passenger!
Your pet’s safety in the motorhome is essential.
- Pet carrier or safety harness: Whilst driving, your pet must be secured to prevent the driver from being distracted and to protect your pet in the event of sudden braking. A secured pet carrier or an approved car harness are the best options.
- Avoid the front passenger compartment: It is safer for them to sit in the back, where there is more space and fewer risks in the event of an accident.
- Meshes or dividers: If your motorhome has a garage connected to the living area, you can set up a safe space there.
- Ventilation: Make sure they have enough ventilation, especially on long journeys or in hot weather.

Before You Go: Essential Preparations
Good planning is key to a stress-free trip; make sure you’ve got everything sorted, especially if you’re crossing borders.
- Visit to the vet: Make sure your pet is up to date with its vaccinations (rabies is compulsory), has been treated for parasites, and has an up-to-date microchip. Ask for a health certificate if you are travelling abroad.
- Documentation: Make sure you bring your European pet passport if you are travelling within the EU, your pet’s vaccination certificate and any other relevant documents.
- Identification: A collar with an ID tag (bearing your phone number) and, if possible, a GPS tracker for dogs or cats.
- Pet travel kit: Their usual food, bowls of water and food, their favourite toys, their bed or blanket, poo bags, wet wipes, and their first-aid kit (plasters, disinfectant, tick tweezers, and any medication they may need).
- Third-party liability insurance: Remember that this is now compulsory for all dogs in Spain
Pet-friendly campsites and destinations
The good news is that there are more and more places that are pet-friendly.
- Look for the "pet-friendly" logo: Many campsites allow pets, and some even have dog showers, play areas or veterinary services. Do your research and book in advance.
- Related apps: Use apps such as Park4Night or Caramaps and filter for "pet-friendly" to avoid any surprises when you arrive.
- Beaches and dog parks: Look for beaches where dogs are allowed (regulations vary widely) and parks or green spaces where they can run freely (always under supervision and in accordance with the rules).
- Restaurants and bars: Some establishments allow pets on their terraces. Ask before you sit down.
- Local regulations: Some places have restrictions on where dogs are allowed (museums, certain shops, etc.). Check in advance to avoid any surprises.

Tips for a 5-star holiday
- Her favourite spot: Put their bed and toys in a fixed spot in the motorhome. The familiar scent will help them feel at ease in a new environment.
- Water always available: Especially in summer. A spill-proof water bowl is a great investment.
- Frequent stops: Every two hours, just like you. They need to stretch their legs, have a drink and go to the toilet. Plan to stop every few hours.
- Temperature control: Be very careful! Motorhomes can heat up quickly. Never leave your pet alone inside in sunny weather, even with the windows slightly open.
- Walks and exercise: Make sure they get enough exercise every day to burn off their energy.
- Pro tip: If this is your pet’s first time in a motorhome, let them explore it for a couple of days before you set off, whilst it’s parked. Make them feel right at home!

Homeowner Responsibility: Be an Ambassador
- Pick up after your dog: Always, without exception. Make sure you take enough bags.
- Keep an eye on your pet: Keep it under control (on a lead if necessary) so as not to disturb other campers or the local wildlife.
- Please follow the rules: Every place has its own rules regarding pets. Following them ensures that they remain welcome.
Travelling with your pet in a motorhome is one of the most rewarding experiences. Seeing how happy they are exploring new places with you is priceless. With a bit of planning and common sense, every trip will be an unforgettable adventure for the whole family!
Enjoy every kilometre with your best friend!
